Fire at tear-gas plant
jamestown, pa.
A fire at the Combined Tactical Systems complex on Kinsman Road in Green Township destroyed a building where tear gas was made.
No one was injured when the fire broke out at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, said Jamestown Volunteer Fire Department assistant chief Tom Luckock. Seven of the company’s 170 employees were in the 30-by-50 square-foot building when a spark from a press that was used for compressing tear gas ignited the gas. Flames spread quickly, Luckock said.
Employees evacuated immediately, and there was no need for any evacuation of the neighborhood, he said. The fire was out in about an hour, he said. Jamestown was assisted by 12 other departments.
The building was destroyed. Luckock said the department does not have a damage estimate for the equipment and building, but said the company has several buildings on its property. It was expected to be open today, he said.
