Lewandowski will not run for Mahoning County sheriff

YOUNGSTOWN — James Lewandowski, who is retired from the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department, today announced he will not be a candidate for sheriff next year.

In a press release, Lewandowski, who spent more than 27 years in the department, said he is enjoying retirement with his wife, who also is retired, and wanted to make sure they enjoy their life together "and forgo political ambition."

Lewandowski said he is throwing his support to Jerry Greene for sheriff. Lewandowski said he's known Greene since Greene was a student in the police academy.

"I know that he has the integrity, leadership skills, knowledge of, and most importantly, commitment to, the sheriff's office and its complex operations," Lewandowski said.
