Baby found unharmed at double-homicide scene on West Side


YOUNGSTOWN — A baby girl was found unharmed today at the scene of a double murder on the city’s West Side.

It is the second time this year an infant has been found at a murder scene.

Steven Cortner, 30, and Shanell Jackson, 23, were found with apparent gun shot wounds just before 2 a.m. in an upstairs bedroom of a home at 2907 Mahoning Ave.

The baby, approximately 2 months old, was found unharmed, lying face down and partially covered in a blanket next to Jackson, according to police.

The baby was transported to Akron Children's Hospital of the Mahoning Valley in Boardman for observation.

On Oct. 8, Tequon J. Sharpe, 20, of 59 East Judson Avenue was found shot in the head. His 10-month-old baby daughter was found unharmed on top of the body.

The deaths are the city’s 20 and 21st homicides this year. There was 20 homicides in the city in 2010.
