BOARDMAN

The second in a monthly series of Republican Readiness 2012 open houses will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at GOP Headquarters, 621 Boardman-Canfield Road. No reservations are required.

A viewing of David Barton’s “American History in Black & White” will be the feature of the evening followed by an open discussion of the history of the Republican Party.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for light refreshments and fellowship.

Mark Munroe, party chairman, said the open houses afford Mahoning Valley residents the opportunity to learn about the issues, candidates and ideals of the party in preparation for making informed voting decisions in the 2012 elections.

Work discrimination

YOUNGSTOWN

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s mobile-outreach center will visit the Youngstown unit of the NAACP on Friday to accept complaints of employment discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, age (40 and older), disability or retaliation.

The EEOC considers retaliation the firing of a worker who complained about job discrimination, gave evidence in a job-discrimination matter or filed a charge of job discrimination with the commission.

The local unit of the NAACP is located in Suite 721 in the PNC Bank Building at Wick Avenue and Commerce Street in downtown Youngstown.

Poland’s role in war

POLAND

Local historian Ted Heineman will give a free presentation on the role of the village in the Civil War at 10 a.m. Sunday in the Fellowship Hall of Poland Presbyterian Church, 2 Poland Manor.

Heineman will discuss the involvement of the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, which included among its officers future Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and William McKinley, who was born in Niles and later moved to Poland.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War.

Jeweler donates

CANFIELD

Komara Jewelers, which celebrated its 63rd year in business last month, has donated $8,000 to the new Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center.

Last month, the jewelry store collected a percentage of its sales to donate to the new breast-care center.
