Former police Chief Jimmy Hughes to run for Mahoning County sheriff

YOUNGSTOWN — Former Youngstown Police Chief Jimmy Hughes will officially announce his candidacy for Mahoning County sheriff on Tuesday.

Hughes, who retired in September from the city’s police force, told The Vindicator last month he would run in the Democratic primary for the position. Hughes said he is having a press conference at 10:30 a.m. to announce his candidacy.

Jerry Greene, a 22-year member of the sheriff’s office, already filed nominating petitions for the seat.

Poland Township Police Chief Brian Goodin plans to run, and James Lewandowski, who retired in May as the sheriff’s chief deputy, is considering seeking the position.

All would run in the March 6 Democratic primary. Dec. 7 is the filing deadline for candidates to file for the primary.

Randall Wellington, sheriff since 1999, isn’t seeking re-election.
