The bidding has proceeded:

WEST NORTH EAST SOUTH

What action do you take?

A. It is tempting to re-open with a bid of two diamonds, since North could have a pretty good hand that was unsuitable for immediate action. Equally possible, however, is that West has a strong major two-suiter and, given the chance, your opponents might sail into an unbeatable game in hearts. Since that risk is real, pass.

What action do you take?

A. Not the best hand we have seen this week, but you must do something. Passing is equivalent to handing the opponents buckets of points for making one diamond doubled with who knows how many overtricks. Partner has asked you to bid, so oblige. Bid one heart, your cheaper three-card suit.

Q. As South, vulnerable, you hold:

xA K Q 10 6 3 u6 vJ 5 wA Q 10 9

The bidding has proceeded:

What do you bid now?

A. Your choice is between three spades, three clubs and two clubs. Three clubs can be discarded immediately — you do not have the values to insist on game. The trouble with three spades is that it could get passed (it is only invitational) when game in clubs is laydown. That leaves two clubs as your best option. Given a chance, a spade rebid later describes your 6-4 distribution and better than average strength.
