Springfield PD to raise funds for canine unit
NEW SPRINGFIELD
Township Police Chief Matthew Mohn plans to establish a canine unit to be financed through fund-raising projects.
He told Springfield Township trustees about the plan at their meeting this week.
Mohn said the township must rely on other police departments, such as Beaver , Boardman and Canfield when they need a dog for a drug or missing-person search.
He said that Patrolman Glen Corey would be the canine handler and would have to train for six weeks. The cost would be $12,750 and Mohn said he will announce fundraisers to cover the cost. He said after the meeting that he is developing fund-raising projects and welcomes any donations toward the project.
Also at the meeting Wednesday, Mohn announced the township has received a $1,625 state grant for bulletproof vests for the police department.
Trustees agreed to pay KLG Mobile Intensive $1,800 for medical supervision of the ambulance service in 2012 and to buy six tires from R & J Tires, New Middletown, for a township truck.
They approved paying Frontline Fire of Boardman up to $4,000 for annual pump maintenance for all four fire engines and $3,113 for repairs and inspection of a truck.
At a special meeting Oct. 25, trustees also hired Kevin Chapel and Marcin Stachowicz as part-time police officers. They will be paid the police contract rate.
Dorothy Keish, recycling coordinator, asked residents not to drop off clothes and other nonrecyclables at the recycling site. She said the materials get wet and cause problems. She said she needs paperback books and jigsaw puzzles. There is only one recycling site in New Middletown. The site at the Springfield Township building is closed for the duration of the turnpike construction, which will end sometime next summer.
