Phantoms Pee Wee team earns road victory
The Youngstown Phantoms Pee Wee hockey team split a pair of games last weekend, falling at home and winning on the road.
On Saturday, the Phantoms began league play with a 7-4 loss to unbeaten Indiana at the Ice Zone. After Indiana opened the scoring 1 minute and 30 seconds into the game, the Phantoms tied the game late in the first period on an unassisted goal by Devin Whitaker (Boardman). With 19 seconds remaining in the first period, Whitaker scored to give the Phantoms a 2-1 lead. Indiana tied the game early in the second period. Danny Beistel (Canfield) gave the Phantoms their final lead at the 2:14 mark in the second period. But Indiana scored the next four goals to seize a 6-3 advantage. Whitaker scored his third goal of the game with 2:45 left. Indiana finished the scoring with a goal late in the period. Goalie Colin Frost (Boardman) faced 43 shots on goal. The Phantoms managed only six shots.
On Sunday, the Phantoms went on the road and rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Arctic Foxes 5-3. The win evened Youngstown‘s league record at 1-1. After falling behind 2-0, Bo Gray (Boardman) got the Phantoms on the scoreboard at 2:48 in the period. Getting the assists were Nick Franz (Boardman) and Devin Whitaker (Boardman). Youngstown evened the score at two apiece on a power play goal by Whitaker with 1:48 remaining in the period. Assisting was Mike Fetsko (Boardman). Youngstown scored the next two goals, as Trey Imhoff (Boardman) and Whitaker each had unassisted scores to give the Phantoms a 4-2 advantage. The Arctic Foxes cut the lead to 4-3, but Whitaker put the game away with his third goal of the game, assisted by Gray. The Phantoms defense was led by Colin Faloon (Austintown). Goalie Colin Frost faced 30 shots.
