Ohio soldier recalls children burned in Iraq

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A former soldier from Ohio who lashed out in 2003 after Army doctors refused to treat three burned Iraqi children says he still has respect for the military.

David Borell’s story gained wide attention eight years ago when an Associated Press photographer captured an image of him being comforted by a platoon leader.

Borell, of Toledo, was in Iraq when two Army doctors refused to help the injured children because their injuries were not life-threatening and had not been inflicted by U.S. troops.

Borell was a sergeant in the Ohio Army National Guard and says that day on the battlefield still angers him.

He told The Blade newspaper in Toledo that he learned much about himself during his military service.
