The Canfield Speech and Debate team started the season on a high note, taking second overall at Columbiana last weekend and bringing home 24 individual awards.

The Cardinals scored 85 team points, falling just three points short of team champion Howland (88).

“It was an excellent showing from our team,” said head coach Jeremy Hamilton. “There were more students from Canfield placing than from any other school. This is a reflection of our students who are committed to being prepared for competition.”

Annie McGlone (Oral Interpretation), Tim Nesnidol (Humor) and Gary Zamary (Impromptu) won their categories, while Dominique Favre (Humor) and Gabrielle Brant (Student Congress) each finished second.

Caroline Bennett (Drama), Maria Kenner (United States Extemporaneous), Kelly Fleming (International Extemporaneous), Kaylee Kapalko (Impromptu), Stacey Slagle and Taylor Swift (Public Forum Debate), Andrik Massaro (Lincoln-Douglas Debate) and Billy Quirk (Student Congress) all took third in their respective competitions.

Lydia Scheel (Drama), Arjun Subramanyam (Impromptu) and C.J. Blaney (Lincoln-Douglas Debate) were fourth. Fifth place was awarded to Hayley Ward (Oral Interpretation), Katelyn Baltes (Original Oratory), Nathan Pecchia and Rosie Jo Neddy (Duo) and Aly Saleh and Kelly Ranttila (Public Forum Debate).

Sixth-place winners were Jenette Morell (Original Oratory) and Shayne Georgeoff (Student Congress).
