Board of control OKs demolition contract
YOUNGSTOWN
The city’s board of control approved a $1.12 million contract with a Cleveland company to demolish several buildings and clean up an old industrial site that will be used by V&M Star, which is working on a $650 million expansion project.
The board on Thursday selected Environmental Management Specialists, which had the least- expensive proposal among the six companies seeking the work.
The city received $1.23 million from the Clean Ohio Revitalization Fund to clean up the 9.24-acre site off U.S. Route 422.
The work will begin in about 30 days and take six to seven months to complete, said Charles Shasho, deputy director of the city’s public works department.
The property was an industrial site dating to the mid-1950s when General Steel Industries operated a warehouse for steel mills and steel brokers. Dempsey used the site to smooth steel using an acid wash at the location years later.
The property, vacant for about a decade, will be used by V&M as part of its $650 million expansion project, said David Bozanich, city finance director and the board of control’s secretary.
V&M plans to use the location as part of its expansion project, but in what capacity is uncertain, Bozanich said.
The city board of control includes the mayor, finance director and the law director.
