YSU adds 2 for basketball; Poland, JFK players sign

The Youngstown State men’s basketball program officially added Bobby Hain of Jupiter, Fla., and Ryan Weber of (Indianapolis) on Wednesday.

Both players signed national letters-of-intent and will join the Penguins for the 2012-13 season.

YSU coach Jerry Slocum likes the offensive abilities of boht players.

“The thing I like about both of these guys is they really can score the ball,” Slocum said. “We are really pleased to have two quality people and highly-talented basketball players join our program.”

Hain, a 6-foot-9 forward from Jupiter High School, was named second-team all-conference as a junior after averaging 13.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game.

Weber, a 6--7 forward from Roncalli High School, helped his squad to an 18-6 overall mark and the school’s fourth sectional championship in the last seven years.

Weber averaged 11.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game and was named Honorable Mention all-county. He was also named to the Marion Holiday Tournament first team.

POLAND SOFTBALL

Poland High softball standouts Erin Gabriel and Jenna Modic made their college choices official on Wednesday.

Gabriel signed with Tennessee, and Modic will join the program at Miami (Ohio) for the 2013 spring season.

They were two members of the Poland softball team that won the state championship last spring, and finished as state runner-up in 2010.

JFK BASEBALL

Warren JFK senior Brendan Cox signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Mercyhurst College.

Cox was honorable mention all-state as a junior. He was named the teams MVP as a freshman and co-MVP as a junior.

He was also named the Eagles’ pitcher of the year as a freshman and sophomore.

Cox is a member of the Astro Falcons of the Youngstown Class B League and was a member of the team that won the Connie Mack World Series.
