Campbell Mayor William VanSuch is holding on to a 20-vote lead over his challenger, 4th Ward Councilman Lew Jackson with at least 30 votes, possibly more, to be counted.

Unofficial results have VanSuch leading Jackson by 0.7 of a percent.

There are at least 30 provisional votes to be counted in Campbell, said Thomas McCabe, Mahoning County Board of Elections director.

A count of those provisional votes won’t start until Nov. 21.

Provisional votes are cast by people who move into a precinct or fail to change their voter registration within 30 days of an election.

“I’ve been in close races before,” Jackson said. “We’ll see how this goes.”

VanSuch, who couldn’t be reached Tuesday by The Vindicator for comment, was appointed mayor in January after the resignation of George Krinos.

Two incumbents in Campbell were defeated.

Council President Juanita Rich lost by 5.28 percentage points to George J. Levendis, a political newcomer.

“The voters of Campbell want some change,” Levendis said. “I’m really excited with the win. I can make Campbell a better place to live. To beat an incumbent the first time running is pretty good.”

Also, Brian J. Macala, the city’s former law director, will be back on the job in January after defeating current Law Director Mark J. Kolmacic in Tuesday’s election.

The only contested race in Struthers saw Mayor Terry Stocker, a Democrat, crush challenger Phil DeMarco, an independent, 81.4 percent to 18.6 percent.

In Youngstown, Clerk of Courts Sarah Brown-Clark, a Democrat, won in the lone citywide race.

She captured 76.4 percent of the vote, easily turning back the challenge of Frank Bellamy, an independent.

Only two of seven city council members faced challengers.

Annie Gillam, D-1st, received 72.1 percent of the vote against Adrian McDowell, an independent, while Paul Drennen, D-5th, received 89 percent of the vote against Republican Plato Kalfas.

In the race for two seats on Canfield City Council, incumbent Steve Rogers was the top vote getter, followed by John Morvay.

Incumbent Marleen M. Belfiore and Frank A. Micchia lost, finishing third and fourth respectively.
