1960: Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kennedy defeatsVice President Richard M. Nixon for the presidency.
1994: Midterm elections result in Republicans winning a majority in the Senate while at the same time gaining control of the House for the first time in 40 years.

1986: A Mary Cassatt painting valued at more than $1 million, “Antoinette at her Dressing Table,” is donated to Youngstown State University by Dr. John J. McDonough. The university plans to sell the painting and use the proceeds to build an art museum.
The Campbell Memorial Red Devils post their 10th consecutive victory of the season with a 14-0 victory over Cardinal Mooney at YSU’s Stambaugh Stadium.

1961: With fewer than 60,000 votes cast in the Youngstown mayoral race, Republican Harry Savasten ousts the Democratic incumbent, Frank R. Franko, by a margin of 4,184.
Republican Robert W. Dunstan ousts first term Democratic Mayor Walter Pestrak in Warren and the GOP gains an 8-2 margin in city council.
1936: Eight fire companies respond to a fire at the Sanitary Mattress Factory on West Avenue, jamming traffic for 10 blocks on Mahoning Avenue.
Headed by Police Capt. Frank Robert, 27 Youngstown patrolmen and detectives keep order at the Campbell Memorial-Youngstown East football game at South High Stadium as thousand tried to crash the gates. A crowd estimated at 15,000 saw the game.
