As road paving and repairs wind down this year, the village is gearing up for next year’s projects.
An emergency repair on East Wood Street, which cost the state $500,000, is finished except for paving, said village Mayor Jim Iudiciani.
The dirt under and along the road, which is state Route 289, sank in September, he said.
Iudiciani also said the village council approved spending nearly $75,000 this year on street paving, which was mainly generated from the half-percent income tax voters approved last year.
Paving took place on Wood Street Extension from Youngstown-Lowellville Road to Ralph Conti Way. Also included in the project was McGill Street from Liberty to West Walnut streets, and Second Street from Liberty up to East Grant streets.
Iudiciani said the paving was finished last month, except for curb-sealing. The Ohio Department of Transportation will solicit bids in December for a paving project that includes River Road from the Struthers line to Washington Street, Washington Street to Jackson Street and Jackson Street to Lowellville Road to the Poland Township line.
The project, which will start in the spring, will be funded with $550,000 of federal money, Iudiciani said.
At the same time, sidewalks on the south side of the village will be improved with $140,000 of state funds. The village will contribute 18 percent toward the project, he said.
Also beginning in the spring, said Iudiciani, will be a stormwater safety upgrade on East Wood Street. The $189,000 project that will include new curbs and catch basins will be funded by the state and an 18-percent village contribution.
