ELECTION UPDATE | Kasich concedes as Issue 2 falls; opponents rejoice

Ohio Gov. John Kasich met the media at about 9:40 p.m. to concede the repeal of Issue 2/Senate Bill 5.

"I've heard their voices," Kasich told members of the media Tuesday night. He also cast aside any notion that the state will be able to further aid local government faced with ongoing revenue shortfalls.

"Let me be clear there is no bailout coming," he warned, saying the state is out of money.

He said it is going to be important for local communities to find ways to deal with their financial challenges.

"We'll continue to work with local government," Kasic added he still had the goal to create a "business-friendly, job-friendly environment" in the state.

Elsewhere in the state. Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga celebrated Issue 2's defeat, saying, "working Ohioans voiced their support for collective bargaining rights and called for an end to politics that put the top one percent over working people."

"It’s past time for our leaders to bring forward an agenda that focuses on job creation and restoring balance to our economy," Burga said.

U.S. Sen Sherrod Brown issued a statement that said in part: “In the first statewide referendum on collective bargaining rights in our nation’s history, Ohioans voted overwhelmingly to stand together and put the middle class first."

"Having rejected this effort to divide us, now we must work together to strengthen our state’s middle class and promote job creation,” Brown added.

“The results tonight are a tremendous victory – not just for Democrats but for all Ohio families," said Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern. "Voters were asked if they support John Kasich’s anti-middle class agenda and they responded with a resounding ‘NO.’"
