Working at YSU is a choice

Working at YSU is a choice

I would like to respond to the Oct. 30 letter from the gentleman from Hudson. I was just wondering how he was forced “to pay union dues simply to keep his job.” As I understand the process, the letter writer must have applied at some point for employment at YSU and had an interview. At that time it would have been explained to the applicant that if he accepts a job at YSU union membership would be required.

That raises the question of why the writer would even want to work at YSU. Could it be that YSU is a great place to work? An educational leader? A place that allows its students and teachers to excel? And last but not least, a place that fairly compensates its employees? I’m sure the writer thought that the base pay was adequate. The fact that there were paid holidays, sick days, paid vacation, working conditions, health insurance and some sort of pension all of which were probably attained through collective bargaining (a benefit of union membership.

At this time the writer had a few options: decline the offer because he was offended that the compensation package would require union membership and would require paying dues to continue receiving the above mentioned benefits or decline the offer of employment because of his moral outrage to having to pay dues. Alas the writer chose to work at YSU. I guess he wasn’t that outraged.

Everyone should keep it clean

People buy or occupy a home in a nice neighborhood, and allow the structure to deteriorate, grass and weeds grow out of control, never trim allowing weeds to evade neighboring yards. These people have no self pride or respect for the neighborhood or neighbors. The street starts showing signs of litter and it doesn’t take long to turn nice neighborhood trashy and into a ghetto.

Boardman Township, do not allow this to continue. The township can cut and trim the grass at these properties and put a tax lien on the properties to pay the cost. My wife has resided on Beechwood Drive for 63 years, me for 36. The vast majority of residents in this neighborhood take care of our property. We don’t deserve less from others.
