1811: U.S. forces led by Indiana Territory Gov. William Henry Harrison defeat warriors from Tecumseh’s Confederacy in the Battle of Tippecanoe.
1861: Former U.S. President John Tyler is elected to the Confederate House of Representatives (however, Tyler dies before he could take his seat).
1916: Republican Jeannette Rankin of Montana becomes the first woman elected to Congress.
1944: President Franklin D. Roosevelt wins an unprecedented fourth term in office, defeating Thomas E. Dewey.
1962: Richard Nixon, having lost California’s gubernatorial race, holds what he called his “last press conference,” telling reporters, “You won’t have Nixon to kick around anymore.”

1986: A first-year English teacher at East High School is ordered out of class but not officially suspended after parents complain about an assignment she gave students that accused them of lying cheating and stealing and referred to them as “low-life.”
The Trumbull County United Way raises a record $2.9 million for 31 human services agencies, exceeding its goal by $4,287.
1971: Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. records a net loss of $5.9 million in the third quarter, compared to net income of $1.2 million for the same quarter a year earlier.
Niles McKinley High blanks Steubenville Big Red, 16-0, before 8,500 fans in Niles Riverside Stadium. Quarterback Tom Andres makes touchdown passes to Dell Gray and Clark West.
1961: The Youngstown Board of Education will abolish its long-standing rule of not hiring employees who have reached the age of 50. Board members declare the rule out of date and morally wrong. The board dropped a ban on hiring married women teachers several years ago.
The Organization of Protestant Men has raised $6,816 toward a goal of $20,000 for its hospital chaplaincy program.
1936: Roland Schweinsburg Jr., 11, is killed while riding a three-wheeler four blocks from his Belmont Avenue home. He was struck by a car driven by a 21-year-old.
