1888: Benjamin Harrison wins the presidential election, defeating incumbent Grover Cleveland with enough electoral votes, even though Cleveland led in the popular vote.

1928: In a first, the results of Republican Herbert Hoover’s election victory over Democrat Alfred E. Smith are flashed onto an electric wraparound sign on the New York Times building.

1944: British official Lord Moyne is assassinated in Cairo, Egypt, by members of the Zionist Stern gang.

1977: Thirty-nine people are killed when the Kelly Barnes Dam bursts, sending a wall of water through Toccoa Falls College in Georgia.

Juvenile Judge Martin P. Joyce denies a defense lawyer’s motion for early release of a star running back on Austintown’s football team so he could play in a state playoff game. The youth is serving a 10-day sentence on an assault charge.

Speaking at a college Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony, former Ohio State University Football Coach Woody Hayes says he probably stayed in coaching too long, saying he was tired, his memory wasn’t as sharp and he “couldn’t coach as well.”
