Inventors to meet

LIBERTY

The Youngstown & Warren Inventors Association will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Liberty Township Administration Building, 1315 Church Hill-Hubbard Road.

A presentation will be given on how the Patent Reform Act of 2011 affects all inventors and information on getting an invention on the Science or Discovery TV channels.

There also will be a discussion on the recent agreement between the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the Native American Intellectual Property Enterprise Council. The meeting is free.

Safety grants given

COLUMBUS

Ten Ohio businesses have received more than $217,000 in safety intervention grants in September to improve workplace safety.

The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Safety Intervention Grant assists Ohio employers in reducing illness and injuries.

Two Trumbull County businesses received grants.

Yar Corp., which produces products for restaurants, was awarded $40,000. Yar will buy a gnocchi-making machine to reduce the risk of injuries related to manual material handling.

Howland Corners Town & Country Veterinary Hospital, which provides medical care to animals, was awarded $3,318. The money will be used to buy mobile examination and transport tables to reduce the risk of injuries.

Ohio private and public employers are eligible for the grants, which provide a 2-to-1 matching amount up to a maximum of $40,000 for a total of $60,000.

Joining Angus group

SALEM

Cornerstone Farms LLC of Salem is a new member of the American Angus Association. The American Angus Association, with nearly 30,000 active adult and junior members, is the largest beef-breed association in the world.

The association records historical information, keeps production records on individual animals and develops selection tools for its members. These programs and services help members produce quality genetics for the beef-cattle industry.

Marcellus webinar

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.

A Web-based seminar sponsored by Penn State University Extension will examine how Marcellus Shale natural-gas development is affecting agriculture in Pennsylvania.

The 75-minute webinar will be at 1 p.m. Thursday. Presenters will be Gary Sheppard and Mark Madden, extension educators. They have experience dealing with Marcellus Shale natural-gas drilling impacts on agriculture in their regions.

Sheppard will explore the impact natural-gas wells have on farms from four perspectives: financial, family, farmstead and social.

Madden will review several case studies of farmers and farms near Marcellus gas-drilling operations.
