Holiday Book Drive for children’s hospital

Barnes & Noble Booksellers, in the Shops at Boardman Park, and Akron Children’s Hospital have teamed up this year to donate books and toys to those in need.
At 7 p.m. Thursday, a kickoff storytime will help promote the Holiday Book Drive.
Representatives from Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning County will be on hand to feature favorite picture books. The book drive lasts through Jan. 1. Anyone can go to the store, at 381 Boardman-Poland Road, until then, pick out an item for children and buy the item to donate to Akron Children’s.

Author-counselor will sign new book
Marilyn Burns of Boardman, a local author and counselor, will sign her second book, “Now I Lay Him Down to Rest,” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 12 at Taste Buds, 3649 Canfield Road, Canfield, and from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Poland Library, 311 S. Main St., Poland.
The book can be purchased at the signings or at www.amazon.com. It is described as a therapeutic tool to help children and adults process the loss of a loved one in a spiritual way. It’s a story of a boy who loses his father in an accident.
Burns also is the author of “Lost No More ... A Mother’s Spiritual Journey Through Her Son’s Addiction,” which was released last year as a tribute to her son’s life and death from addiction.
Leetonia library plans new book group
LEETONIA
The Leetonia Community Public Library is starting a second book-discussion group, which will choose titles from the Wall Street Journal’s book reviews.
The group will meet the first Wednesday of the month beginning at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7 at the library.
The first book to be discussed will be “The Sun Kings: The Unexpected Tragedy of Richard Carrington and the Tale of How Modern Astronomy Began.” Copies of the book will be available at the Leetonia library.
CSI Y’town program to feature Roberts
AUSTINTOWN
Cleveland author Les Roberts will make an appearance at a free CSI Y’town program, set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Austintown Library.
Hear about his newest novel, set in Youngstown in 1985, “The Strange Death of Father Candy.” In the book, Dominick Candiotti returns to Youngstown for the funeral of his brother, the Rev. Richard Candiotti. Not buying the suicide ruling, Dominick sets out to find the truth about the death of “Father Candy.”
Roberts won the initial PWA (Private Eye Writers of America) Best First Private Eye Novel Competition and is the author of the Milan Jacovich mystery series. He won the Cleveland Arts Prize for Literature and the Sherwood Anderson Literary Award. Roberts will talk with the group, answer questions and sign books.
