Workshop will promote wellness, peace

Hearts for a Safe Harbor and Capacitar International will present “Healing Ourselves, Healing Our World,” a program on wellness practices for self-care and community outreach for Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, on Wednesday at the Davis Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave., in Mill Creek Park.

Sign-in and breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Those attending should dress in comfortable clothing.

The workshop will present simple wellness practices for self-care as well as for use with schools, in therapy, health, education, mental health, social work, volunteer work, ministry and community service.

In addition, Hearts for a Safe Harbor will present an Emmy Award-winning documentary, “War Dance,” at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at St. Paul Church, 10143 Main St., New Middletown.

The film depicts the struggles of youths in war-torn northern Uganda and their dreams of winning at the National Music Competition. It’s rated PG-13.

Capacitar, a nonprofit organization based in California, works in 35 countries in the Americas, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, teaching people skills to heal themselves, their families and communities.

Hearts for a Safe Harbor is a Canfield-based charitable nonprofit organization aiding war-traumatized youth in northern Uganda since 2004.

An article in The Vindicator about the abduction of children for use in armed conflict inspired a small group of people to begin an effort to help the suffering children.
