Liberty apartment fire deemed suspicious

LIBERTY

Fire crews continue to investigate a fire that destroyed a vacant apartment complex here.

Capt. Arnold Barzak said someone notified the department of the fire just before 3 p.m. Thursday. Crews could see thick, black smoke coming from the property at 1740 Naylor Lloyd Road as they approached, he said.

Barzak said the complex closed about six years ago and has been through foreclosures, changes in ownership and tax issues. “It’s had a rocky past,” he said.

He said the fire is suspicious, and the department is still investigating.

“It’s definitely suspicious because there’s no gas or electric, nothing in there that could have fueled it on its own,” he said.
