The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown’s 47th Horticultural Show took place at Fellows Riverside Gardens recently.

More than 35 participants entered fruits, vegetables or flowers.

Robert Voland in the youth division was again the sweepstakes winner with 40 points and six Best-in-Sections. His mixed-vegetable basket won Best in Show.

Dianna Mullins’ mixed rock garden won Best in Show in the adult division. Rodney Toth took the adult sweepstakes with 53 points and six Best-in-Sections.

One of the more unusual entries in the youth division was peanuts, grown by Katie McHugh. She won a blue ribbon.

Other winners were Mary Walters’ Emerald Isle Cactus, Terry Voland’s Red Heart plums and Dave Causer for his five perfectly matched gourds.

Tiffany Voland’s blue grapes and Joey Fagnano’s rudbeckia also were winners.

With an entry weighing 3 pounds, 12 ounces, Don Brown won the Larry Whetson Heaviest Tomato Contest.

Toth, who is chairman of the show, says the MGCY show is one of the best in the area.

He encourages all gardeners to enter next year.
