In her older books, author Laura Numeroff has explored the repercussions of giving a moose a muffin, a mouse a cookie and a cat a cupcake.

For her latest work, Numeroff decided to give a dog a doughnut, and nationally, she will donate a portion of the book’s proceeds to the First Book program.

To celebrate the release of Numeroff’s latest tale, Ellen Finan of the First Book Organization of Trumbull County visited Boardman Barnes and Noble on Oct. 15 to read the story to local youngsters.

In the tradition of Numeroff’s “If You Give...” series, the precocious dog of her newest story doesn’t stop at just wanting a doughnut. As Finan read, the dog asked for apple juice, and soon after went to search for more apples and then began a backyard adventure playing baseball, pretending to be a pirate, and flying a kite. After eventually finding more apples for juice, the playful pup of the story finally sits to eat his doughnut.

“Today’s tale is a fun one to read and I’m very glad to share it with the community, Guests will do something great simply by buying one of Numeroff’s books,” explained Finan of her reading.

During the month of October, Barnes and Noble donated two books to the First Book program when guests bought any books of the “If You Give...” series. If guests bought “If You Give a Dog a Donut,” Barnes and Noble provided two books specifically to the Trumbull First Book organization.

After the story time, guests received doughnut silly bands, finished themed word searches, concentration games and mazes, and colored a photo of the star of “If You Give a Dog a Donut.”

“Our organization aims to address one of the most important factors affecting literacy, which is access to the books kids need. Simply having books can transform a child’s life,” Finan said of the First Book Program.
