The Fitch cheerleaders raised $1,000 for the American Cancer Society by selling T-shirts and hoodies for the “Pink Cancer Awareness” Day and game on Oct. 21.

The cheerleaders wore sweatshirts they sold to raise money for the cause as well as sweatpants, used pink pom-poms, pink shoelaces and pink cancer awareness bows for the night. The football players wore pink socks (donated by The Touchdown Club) and their helmets were adorned with a pink ribbon sticker.

Many of the football players also wore pink gloves and/or were wrapped with pink tape for the night. The Fitch Cadets also all wore pink beanie hats.

The Austintown community also got involved. Jones and Associates on Mahoning Avenue filled the orders for the merchandise and delivered to the schools. Party On! in the Mahoning Plaza donated eight dozen pink balloons to help decorate the stadium.

“The cheerleaders wanted to raise money for the American Cancer Society because they do many events for the community and felt it is an important organization and that tying the game and the schools and the day in altogether would be a great way to get the community involved,” said cheerleading adviser Chrissy Farr.

“This was a great way to show this support, while raising money for an important cause. I know that explaining to my son and daughter, a first and second-grader at Watson was important – a life-learning lesson and fun at the same time by allowing them to be involved with the purchase of the shirts. It made them aware of the situation and seriousness of the cause, but allowed them to have fun in the participation.”
