The Hill Brothers visited Frank Ohl Intermediate on Oct. 7 to teach the school’s fourth- and fifth-graders the power of respect and character.

“This is our third year inviting the Hill Brothers to Frank Ohl,” explained principal Dennis Rice. “Their show today will definitely start our school year off right and have everyone’s toes tapping for the rest of the day.”

The Hill Brothers, or Jerry Raven and Judd Sunshine, have been performing together for 35 years and made a long trip from Buffalo, N.Y., to entertain at Frank Ohl. Their musical presentations include messages about reading, bullying, exercising and healthy choices. During their presentation, they focused on character education, but still managed to insert plenty of fun into the festivities.

“Today, we’re going to sing songs, play games and learn that there is power in respect and responsibility. They both are great tools that you can use in life,” shared Jerry Raven.

Through songs and skits, the Hill Brothers taught that the best way to get another person’s attention is a polite “excuse me.” The Hill Brothers taught their version of the golden rule with their song, “You Respect me, I’ll Respect You.”

Judd Sunshine then taught a creative form of teamwork, by teaching Frank Ohl fourth- and fifth-graders to rise when he said the word “up” and sit when he said “down.”

The instructions became interesting once the brothers sang “The Noble Duke of York.” When they shared the lyrics “And when they’re up, they’re up, and when they’re down, they’re down,” the quick sitting and rising had many guests smiling and laughing.

“It’s fun to work together, isn’t it? Having good character is really cool,” said Sunshine.
