After being postponed a week because of bad weather, the Canfield Dairy Queen’s annual Pumpkin Hunt welcomed approximately 150 children on a beautiful autumn morning Oct. 8 to search for treats in a haystack.
Dairy Queen staffers and volunteers from Rush Church, located in Canfield, laid out more than 500 mini pumpkins and lots and lots candy on the Green. They then covered all the goodies up with hay and the children had to hunt through the pile to find their surprises.
According to Pam Simmons, longtime Dairy Queen employee, the event celebrated the end of the summer season.
“This event is held to thank our customers for coming to our store all season. We are coming down to the end of our season and this is our last hurrah of the year. Canfield has been very good to our Dairy Queen,” Simmons said.
Each mini pumpkin had a number printed on the bottom and at the end of the hunt, children were asked to check their pumpkins, as corresponding numbers were chosen at random with gift certificates for Dairy Queen treats, such as Dilly Bars, sundaes and Blizzards, being given away as prizes.
Jill Barton, pastor of Rush Church, was master of ceremonies and pulled the winning numbers and handed out the prizes. Volunteers from the church also helped clean up the straw after the event.
“It was so nice of the volunteers from Rush Church to help us with the event. We really appreciate it,” Simmons said.
