Montessori school hosts Baby Talk

The Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley, 2008 Lynn Ave., Youngstown is hosting Baby Talk: Where Babies Communicate every Tuesday in November.

The classes taught by Karen Steed, Deaf Educator and Sign Language Interpreter and Barb Ricks, Speech Language Pathologist is designed to increase vocabulary, reduce frustration and expand expressive language in babies.

Classes are geared to children ages 6 months to 2 and a half years and their parents.

Baby Talk level I will be Tuesdays in November (8,15,22) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Baby Talk level II will be Tuesdays in November (8,15,22) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Class fees are $50 and include the session and sign language resource materials.

Enjoy Olde Fashioned Christmas

Lanterman’s Mill will be decked out in holiday finery Nov. 26-27 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Olde Fashioned Christmas at the Mill.

The program will include Santa, artisans demonstrating crafts, a juggler, a balloon artist and musicians. Bring a hat, scarf or pair of mittens to decorate a “Giving Tree.” Donated items will warm-up children in need from Mahoning County this winter.

Shop in the Gardens Holiday Open House

Shop the beautiful garden-related items, jewelry and holiday and home d cor today and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

The limited edition 2012 Mill Creek MetroParks calendar from local nature photographer Scott Lanz will also be available.

Profits from the calendar sales support the future Ohio Woodland Garden at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Meet Les Roberts at library

The Austintown library is hosting CSI Y’town on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Cleveland author Les Roberts will speak about his newest novel, “The Strange Death of Father Candy” which is set in Youngstown in 1985.

Roberts is the winner of the initial PWA (Private Eye Writers of America) Best First Private Eye Novel Competition and is the author of the Milan Jacovich mystery series. The CSI Y’town program, sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC, invites all area readers, writers and fans of murder mysteries to the presentation and book signing. Baby Brilliant events

Parents and caregivers are invited to bring their little ones to the Austintown library on Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon for an open house. Children can visit stations and participate with hands-on activities designed to get them ready to read. Books and Baby Brilliant Kits will be available to pick up and take home for activities that highlight early literacy.

The Austintown Library is hosting Baby Brilliant: Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s on Nov. 9, 16, 23 and 30 at 10 a.m. for children ages 2-3. The program will include developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help children become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Library hosts Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books

The Austintown library will host Baby Brilliant: Bonding with babies and Books for Lapsitters on Nov. 3, 10 and 17 at 9:30 a.m. and Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books for Walkers on Nov. 3, 10 and 17 at 11 a.m.

The lapsitters program is for children who are not walking independently. The walkers program is for children who are walking independently.

Both programs will include 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories followed by time for free play.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Design fresh flower centerpieces

Design a fresh flower centerpiece at Fellows Riverside Garden on Nov. 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Lemon leaves, eucalyptus berries and hypericum share the limelight with autumn-hued roses in this Thanksgiving centerpiece. Dolly Vivalo will instruct you step by step in the design of this stunning fresh flower arrangement placed in a unique leaf vase.

The cost is $28 for Mahoning County residents and $35 for non-residents.

The Gardens presents Breakfast Botany:

Fellows Riverside Gardens invites you to Breakfast Botany: Birch on Nov. 18 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Start your morning with a brisk walk through the Gardens on then return to the Garden Caf to enjoy a light breakfast and learn about plants in the birch family.

Library features Creation Station

The Austintown library will feature a Creation Station: Bird of a Feather during library hours the month on November. Children of all ages are invited to choose a turkey, eagle, cardinal or mallard matter and decorate it with feathers.

Library hosts Family Night Capades

The Austintown library will host Family Financial Fling: A Smart Money Program on Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. The program will include active adventures for school-age children and preschoolers.

Library hosts PS2sday

The Austintown library will host PS2sday, video gaming for teens in grade 7-12, on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

Autumn craft show set

The Austintown Middle School’s PTA will host its 28th annual Craft Show on Saturday at AMS from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The admission is free and will include more than 200 vendors, crafts, food, a Chinese auction and more.

Soldier returns from Middle East

David A. Erickson has returned from the Middle East on his third tour of duty with the U.S. Army. Erickson previously served in Kandahar, Afghanistan. His wife, Monica, and four sons, Christopher, Brandon, Aaron and David James reside in Hobart, Ind.

He is the son of Jim and Mary Kay Erickson and Suzanne Erickson of Austintown.

Fitch PTSA night out

The Fitch Parent Teacher Student Association will host a night out on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Barry Dyngles, Raccoon Road in Austintown. There will be a DJ, 50/50 and basket raffles.

The cost is $20 for a buffet and non-alcoholic beverages or $40 for a buffet and alcoholic beverages. The buffet includes pulled pork, Carolina chicken, vegetable, macaroni and cheese, salad, roll and dessert.

New fungal nail laser treatment available

Austintown Podiatry Associates are now offering the new FDA-approved laser treatment for fungal toenail infections. This new high-tech treatment is now available as a simple, painless 10 minute in-office procedure.

Traditional treatments for nail infections have included topical anti-fungals (with relatively poor success rate) and oral medication. Studies are showing up to a 70 percent success rate with this noninvasive treatment.
