Mission needs turkeys

WARREN

The Warren Family Mission is in need of turkeys for upcoming Thanksgiving holiday meals to be served at 361 Elm Road NE on Nov. 23 from noon to 3 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at 2671 Youngstown Road SE, Warren, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or after hours and Saturday and Sunday at 361 Elm Road.

The mission also needs other items for its holiday meal, including stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, cream of mushroom soup, pies, relish-tray items (olives, pickles), coffee, sugar, coffee creamer, punch ingredients, gift cards and monetary donations. AARP driver program

HUBBARD

The Hubbard Public Library, 436 W. Liberty St., is hosting the AARP Safe Driver Program on Nov. 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Coffee, hot tea and noshes will be provided. All seniors are invited to pre-register by calling the library at 330-534-3512, ext 3.

The AARP is offering a discount for safe drivers. During November, any veteran and spouse can attend the AARP Safe Driver Program for free. The usual program charge is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members.

Program participants can expect their attendance to reduce their insurance costs 5 percent to 10 percent. To maintain these auto-insurance discounts, the program must be attended once every three years.

Medical ethics project

GREENVILLE, PA.

UPMC Horizon, Thiel College, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and St. Paul’s are offering the Community Medical Ethics Project on Nov. 16 at Thiel College. Two sessions with identical content are offered at 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., in the Sawhill Georgian Room in the Howard Miller Student Center.

The keynote speaker is Dr. David Barnard, Ph.D, JD, professor of medicine and law at the University of Pittsburgh Center for Bioethics and Health Law. His presentation is “Suffering and Compassion: Moral Boundaries in the Care of the Dying.”

Dining with Diabetes

Shepherd of the Valley — Niles, 1500 McKinley Ave., is offering Dining with Diabetes, a cooking school and nutrition education program for people with diabetes and their family members or caregivers, conducted by the Ohio State University Extension staff.

Classes are from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 14, 21 and 28. The cost for the three classes is $20. During Dining with Diabetes, participants learn how to incorporate good, healthy cooking techniques and other practices to help control blood sugar. Participants will see live cooking demonstrations, sample food, gain insights on healthy eating, and learn skills to manage diabetes.

Rally about famine

CANFIELD

A Mahoning Valley grass-roots group, “People Fighting Famine,” aiming to tell the story of the suffering of people in East Africa, has sent a mailing to 450 faith communities in the Mahoning Valley inviting representatives to attend a rally Nov. 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road, Canfield.

There will be brief formal presentations at 1:30 and 3 p.m., and the afternoon will include information stations and light refreshments. The organizers hope to increase awareness about the scope and severity of the famine.

At the rally, the group will tell the story of the starving masses of human beings in East Africa, and will continue to do so as long as the famine continues, said Vicki Vicars, a group member.

‘Bras and Breast Health’

GROVE CITY, Pa.

The Magee Comprehensive Breast Center at UPMC Horizon and Maidenform at Grove City Premium Outlets are teaming up on “Bras and Breast Health,” a free event featuring tips on bra fittings and breast health. The event is Nov. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maidenform outlet store, Suite 515, Grove City Premium Outlets.

The evening will include a presentation on good breast health from Dr. Maryann Payne, breast surgeon with the Magee Comprehensive Breast Center, as well as free bra fittings from Maidenform staff, refreshments and a 30-percent discount on Maidenform merchandise to all attendees.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be a private party after store hours. Registration is required.

Hospice volunteers

The Alliance Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice is seeking volunteers for its organization, who after a three-day training program will provide support in the community to the terminally ill and their families.
