1971: Actor, comedian and raconteur Arthur Treacher makes his first visit to the Youngstown area in 35 years to open a fish and chips restaurant bearing his name on Market Street in Boardman.
The congregation of First Baptist Temple will vote on selling the church that it has used for 46 years that straddles W. Boardman Street and Central Square. The price will be revealed at the meeting.
1961: U.S. Treasury agents continue their gambling raids, arresting four men in Youngstown taverns and a Niles housewife said to be part of a big Trumbull County gambling operation.
Joseph Bryan, juvenile court referee, recommends that a 16-year-old Youngstown boy be sent to the Mansfield Reformatory and his 15-year-old accomplice in car theft to the Boys Industrial School. A 19-year-old accomplice got 30 days in jail and a $25 fine when he appeared in county court.
1936: Alan R. Eurich of 4138 Oak Knoll Drive, Youngstown, is a member of the crew of the 92-foot schooner Yankee that has set sail on a round-the world cruise scheduled to last until May 1938.
All existing records on the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co.’s hot strip mill are broken in October when production exceeded 73,000 net tons. The previous mark was 64,000 tons.
The Youngstown Junior Chamber of Commerce endorses the purchase of voting machines but opposes a $210,000 bond issue to pay for them.
