Revere’s speed, quick goals beat Lakeview
BRECKSVILLE
Coming out of halftime, the Revere High boys soccer team had a 1-0 advantage over Lakeview, despite the Bulldogs creating more scoring chances. Colin Romisher made sure his squad struck early to seal the deal in the second half.
They’re called the Minutemen for a reason.
The Revere senior scored from the outside at the 38:34 mark to ensure a 2-0 victory in a Division II regional semifinal on Tuesday at Brecksville-Broadview Heights Stadium.
“They definitely picked it up after halftime,” Lakeview’s Louie Novakovich said. “They picked it up 10 times more than the first half and we didn’t respond to it.”
Romisher was also involved on Revere’s first goal when he passed to Max Palazzo who took a shot from 25 yards out, delivering it to the top left corner of the net right past goalkeeper Alex Rosowicz.
“He’s up there,” defender Evan Olbrych said of Romisher as one of the best he’s played against. “You always have to give them a step, and I might not be the fastest, but I gave it my all.”
Revere was the fastest team Lakeview has played all year, according to coach Nate Mailach.
“Their team speed was something we’ve never seen before,” Mailach said. “We couldn’t adjust to it. Every one of their guys was faster than our fastest guy.
Usually, that’s Novakovich.
“I am pretty fast, myself, and they were right there keeping up with me or they were in front of me,” the senior said. “It shocked me so I completely had to change the way I play my game.”
The Bulldogs took four worthy shots in the first half, including a free kick 30 yards out by Jake Colbrunn. Novakovich handled the kick inside the goal box and attempted a shot near the left post, but keeper Joel Gerberich jumped on it.
“If we would’ve capitalized on some of those chances, this game would have been a different outcome,” Mailach said.
It was an ending that the Bulldogs weren’t used to, either.
“It took us 20 games before we got shut out this year,” Mailach said. “So, that was a shock to our guys.”
Lakeview wrapped up the season at 16-2-2, while Revere will face Marlington on Saturday for the regional champpionship.
Mailach doesn’t consider this season a disappointment, at all. Why should he? The Bulldogs captured an All-American Conference and district title, heights rarely reached in the program.
“Those guys got to experience something they haven’t experienced in 10 years at Lakeview,” Mailach said.
Olbrych doesn’t even consider Tuesday’s game a wash in the slightest.
“We stuck together, the sophomore said. “We never gave up and we were always looking to get those goals back, if not the next two.”
