Repairs to roof at Covelli cost $21K

City council will consider spending $21,483 for roof improvements to the Covelli Centre to stop water damage to the arena’s luxury suites.
Melted snow on the center’s main roof flows onto the roofs above the suites, causing water to leak and damage the suites, said Eric Ryan, the center’s executive director.
International Coliseums Co., which managed the center before Ryan, tried to repair the roof four or five years ago without notifying the arena’s insurance company, said Sean T. McKinney, the city’s buildings and grounds commissioner.
That invalidated the warranty on the roofs, he said.
The latest repair work is done, which restores the 30-year warranty.
Council will vote Wednesday to approve the $21,483 bill from Boak & Sons Inc., the Austintown company that did the improvements.
The legislation would pay for improvements to the rubber roofs above the suites as well as the placement of gravel on top of those roofs, Ryan said.
Also Wednesday, council will consider allowing the board of control to accept a $198,986 state grant for environmental-cleanup testing at the former Davidson Metals property on Wilson Avenue.
The work at the 8.18-acre site includes testing wells, soil and asbestos in about six buildings that housed industrial operations for more than 60 years. It was used last in 2009 by a waste-oil recycling business.
The city wants to clean it and use the property as an industrial site.
