Chiefs beat San Diego in OT

KANSAS CITY, Mo.

Ryan Succop’s 30-yard field goal with 5:16 left in overtime gave the Kansas City Chiefs a 23-20 win over the San Diego Chargers.

San Diego had the ball first in overtime, but went three-and-out. The Chiefs drove from their 19 to the San Diego 13, and Succop kicked the game-winner on third down.

Phillip Rivers led San Diego to within a chip shot field goal of winning the game in regulation, but he mishandled the snap at the Kansas City 15.

Not to be outsdone, Matt Cassel led the Chiefs — out of timeouts — into San Diego territory, but his pass was intercepted by Eric Weddle at the Chargers’ 28-yard line with six seconds remaining.

It seemed for a while like Rivers would lead San Diego to an improbable comeback win after the Chargers trailed 13-3 at halftime.

Jackie Battle’s 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter gave the Chiefs a 20-12 lead.

But Rivers led the Chargers on an 80-yard, 10-play drive to tie the score with 7:11 remaining.

Curtis Brinkley dove in from the 2, then caught the 2-point conversion pass from Rivers — which was upheld by video review — to tie the score.

San Diego’s defense forced a three-and-out, then took over at the Chiefs’ 48 following a 31-yard punt return by Patrick Crayton and a 5-yard ineligible downfield penalty on Kansas City.

Rivers’ biggest completion of the game was a 19-yarder to Patrick Crayton on third-and 18 from the Chargers’ 44 with just over three minutes remaining.

Six plays later, on first down, Rivers fumbled and the Chiefs recovered.
