3 finalists named for Mathews chief

VIENNA

After its first round of interviews, Mathews Board of Education has narrowed its search to fill the schools superintendent post to three candidates. Board President Ken Wallace said the three are Stephen Chiaro, Jefferson K-8 School lead principal, Warren City Schools; Kevin Spicher, middle school principal, Howland School District; and Deborah Grant, elementary school principal, Ravenna School District. Wallace said 30 candidates applied for the position.

He said the three will undergo a second round of interviews with board members and a search committee.

Lee Seiple, who has been Mathews superintendent since 1999, is retiring, effective July 31.

Get ready to run in Smoky Hollow

Youngstown

The annual Smoky Hollow 5K Run and post-race party will be July 9.

The eighth-annual run celebrates the history of the Smoky Hollow neighborhood, just east of the Youngstown State University campus, and starts and finishes at Harrison Field on Walnut Street.

The 5K starts at 9 a.m., followed by the 1-mile family fun walk at 9:10 a.m. The post-race party is at 9:45 a.m. at Cassese’s MVR restaurant.

The entry fee is $15 for early registrants, and $20 after July 4 and on race day. Children ages 12 and under can register for $7.

To register, go to www.gopherarun.com. Race-day registration will begin at 7:45 a.m. at Harrison Field. A T-shirt is guaranteed to the first 300 registered entrants, according to the news release.

An app to visit, apply to YSU

Youngstown

Android phone users now can download a Youngstown State University application.

The app, which also is available for Apple products, has a virtual walking tour of the campus with stops at more than 20 buildings. It gives a 360-degree view of facilities such as the Ward Beecher Planetarium, the Andrews Student Recreation Center and Stambaugh Stadium, according to a YSU news release issued Sunday.

It can be downloaded for free through the Android Market online or on your phone.
