Local federation members gather at scholarship luncheon

Members of the Youngstown Area Federation of Women’s Clubs met recently for a scholarship luncheon at the Youngstown Country Club. YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Area Federation of Women’s Clubs, affiliated with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and the Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs, met May 18 at the Youngstown Country Club for a scholarship luncheon.

YAFWC President Debra Kostelic introduced honored guests and the speaker, Atty. Evelyn Bachman, president of the OFWC, who congratulated YAFWC on 100 years of the two federations serving together.

Valorie Zurawick presented a $2,500 scholarship to YSU sophomore Megan Harwell, who is pursuing a degree in early childhood education.

Kostelic also announced the selection of Zurawick, a 30-year member, as YAFWC Woman of the Year.

Music was by senior pianist Sean Baron of the YSU Dana School of Music. Member Dorothy Schwers, who introduced Baron, was his first piano teacher.

On display were numerous certificates and awards presented to YAFWC at the May 19 Northeast District Legislation Day. Cathy Campana gave the meditation, and table centerpieces were by Fortnightly IV Club.
