DICKERSON RUN, Pa.

Emergency crews in western Pennsylvania have recovered the body of a kayaker who went missing a week ago in swift waters at Ohiopyle State Park.

Park officials and the Fayette County coroner’s office says the body of 31-year-old James Whipkey of New Florence was pulled from the Youghiogheny River in Dunbar Township on Friday.

Park manager James Juran tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the body was spotted by a worker at the nearby Wheeler Bottom treatment plant.

Whipkey and another man launched their kayaks near the Stewarton rapids May 21 but hit rough water, and the other man later reported Whipkey missing.
