Emily Herman of Youngstown, a Youngstown State University graduate student in clinical mental health and school counseling, received the 2011-12 Chi Sigma Iota National Fellowship Award at the 2011 American Counseling Association Conference in New Orleans.

CSI is the national honor society for professional counselors.

The award recognizes graduate and doctoral students of exceptional merit who have exhibited leadership potential at their universities.

Herman earned a bachelor’s degree in public health from YSU in 2009 and is a dual-track graduate student in the counseling master’s program.

She is completing her school-counseling internship at South Range High School in Beaver Township and Kirkmere Elementary in Youngstown and her clinical mental health counseling internship at D&E Counseling Services in Youngstown.

Also, seven Mahoning Valley residents have been recognized as members of Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization at Youngstown State University.

Beth Lynn Earles and Peter P. Zelinka III, both of Canfield, Sophia Maria Ann DiRusso of North Lima, Tyler Vitus of Campbell, Julia Rose Modarelli of Youngstown and Mario A. Leone of Youngstown were all recognized as members.

Dana Marie Dickey of Canfield has been chosen to serve as the secretary of YSU’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Lambda.

Sigma Alpha Lambda is a national leadership and honors organization dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment.
