The competitive juices were flowing during Throwback Game Night sponsored by the Youth Collaborative of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. The event was May 13 for local teens in grades 5-12 at St. Michael’s Family Life Center.

According to organizers, the event was organized to get the kids out and communicating with each other, the old-fashioned way.

“We wanted to provide a place for the kids to go and have fun and for them to be able to talk to each other, without the help of electronics. We wanted them to be able to communicate with their peers over an ‘old-fashioned’ board game,” said Keith Campanelli.

A new small toy or game to be donated to underprivileged kids living in Grahn, Ky., in Appalachia or two canned goods to benefit the Rescue Mission’s Food Pantry gained attendees access to a variety of games.

Games they could play included Apples to Apples, Trivial Pursuit, Clue, Scrabble, Monopoly, chess, checkers, Sorry, Yahtzee and Pictureka. A large game of Twister, consisting of four mats, was also set up for the evening.

To add to the ‘old-fashioned’ aspect of the night, the teens were served root beer floats.

Several Youth Collaborative parent volunteers helped with the evening, from serving refreshments, to calling the Twister games, to setting up the board games.

“The Youth Collaborative is building the youth of St. Michael’s and we are always looking for things they are interested in doing. We are interested in organizing more youth events for the teens of St. Michael’s and the community,” said Campanelli.

The Youth Collaborative holds several events for the youth throughout the year, including Youth Connect, a shut-in for high school students, movie nights and a dance for middle school students. The group will do a car wash July 3 to raise money to buy things the teens want to have in their youth center.

“The kids will raise money to furnish the youth center with things like couches, video games and anything else they feel they need,” Campanelli said.
