Canfield finishes first in Red Tier

The Canfield High School tennis team defeated Howland 3-2 in its last match of the season and finished 12-2 for the AAC Red Tier championship. Poland finished second in the tier, followed by Howland and Niles.

In the final match play, singles Mark Dalvin and Mark Stanislaw won against Howland competitors John Morello and Boris Tatic in 6-0, 6-4 and 6-0, 6-0 sets respectively.

Tony El-Hayek was defeated by Matt Madgar 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles play, Jared Hofsess and Ryan Kaleel won against Dan Ames and Logar Sturgeon 6-2, 6-1 and Robert Ames and Andrew Ames defeated the Canfield team of Will Brown and Nick Debiec 6-4, 6-4.

Canfield track teams second and third at AAC meet

The Canfield girls track team finished second at the All-American Conference Red Tier meet Monday. The meet was resumed from earlier this month when it was postponed by hazardous weather.

The Cardinals had 105 team points. Howland (107) won the meet and Poland (91) was third.

Canfield’s individual winners were senior Emily Gleichert (12.68) in the 100, freshman Devin Foley (meet-record 26.65) in the 200, and junior Maggie Bresnahan (109-6) in the discus. Canfield’s Rachel Morris, Katie Richter, Stephanie Carroccee and Gleichert won the 4x100 relay (meet-record 50.08). Canfield also won the 4x800 relay, run by Nicole Tiberio, Kaylee Kilbert, Jillian Smith and Emma Ware in 10:25.65.

The boys squad finished third with 70 team points. Howland (123) won the meet, while Poland (74) was second.

Canfield had two individual champions — junior Jon Hutnyan in the 1600 (4:44.79) and senior Tyler Mettille in the 110 hurdles (15.02). Canfield’s 4x800 relay of Jeremy Hammond, Ben Gleichert, Rob Reed and Nick Tocicki won in 8:34.94.

Canfield’s Gelonese to play at Mount

Canfield High School senior Anthony Gelonese has committed to attend the University of Mount Union and play football this fall.

Gelonese, a 6-2, 200 pound end, was an all-conference selection. He is the son of John and Joann Gelonese.
