Poland doubles team headed to state

Poland doubles team Ken Duncan and Garrett Gardner won a pair of matches last Saturday at the Division II district tournament to earn a spot at this weekend’s state tennis tournament. The state tourney will be played at Hilliard Davidson High School in suburban Columbus.

At districts, the duo defeated Wooster Triway’s Adam Zimmerman and Tyler Flickinger 6-2, 6-0 Wednesday morning. Duncan-Gardner followed that up with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Daniel Huang and Lukas Zalesky (University School) to clinch a state berth.

On Saturday in the semifinals, the duo lost 6-0, 6-3 to Sid Ahuj and Dan Lubarsky (Hawken). They rallied to beat Mike Riley and Wes Noall (Gilmour) 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 to clinch third place.

Track teams second and third at AAC meet

The Poland boys track team finished second, while the girls were third at the All-American Conference Red Tier Championships on Monday. The meet was resumed from earlier this month when it was postponed by hazardous weather.

The boys squad had two individual champions — junior Chris Anderson in the 400 (51.93) and senior Matt Gleydura in the 3200 (10:31.47). They also helped the 4x400 relay to a victory (3:33.67), joined by Johnny Medina and Kevin Krumpak.

In the girls’ meet, Poland senior Stephanie Andrews (16.40) won the 100 hurdles and classmate Mary Carchedi (49.01) was tops in the 300 hurdles.

Softball team shuts out rival Canfield

Looking to stay sharp as they prepare for the Division II regional tournament, the Poland softball team stayed crisp in their shutout. Erin Gabriel allowed just one hit and struck out 16 Cardinal batters. Jenna Modic homered and doubled for the Bulldogs, while Taylor Miokovic also hit a home run and brought in a pair. Adriana Sikora led the game with three RBIs.

Poland golfer Mitzel first at qualifier

Allison Mitzel, a senior at Poland Seminary High School, placed first in the Optimist International Pre-qualifer at Indian Run Golf Club shooting a 75. Next month in Canton, Mitzel will be playing in the State Qualifier.
