Most Likely to Write This Column

Back in fifth grade, I thought I was pretty cool. Everyone at school liked me and I had proof.
At the end of that school year, the kids voted for others in our class in certain categories — Most Likely To Fall Asleep in Class, Class Clown, Cutest Girl, etc. There were a bunch of categories and I don’t recall them all.
But when the votes were counted and the certificates were handed out, I cleaned up! I won “Cutest Boy In Class,” “Funniest Boy in Class” and “Nicest Boy in Class.” Seriously, you can look it up - I’m sure they have it written down somewhere.
That was a fun time. We were “graduating” from fifth grade to middle school and were excited to start attending a new school building the next school year.
Although there are many things that have changed about life at school since those days, this time of year brings out a lot of activities that have held true. Most schools still have fun days, where the students get to run around outside playing games, eating snacks and such. No books, no tests, just fun.
I bet if you asked most students - from kindergarten to high school - the best weeks of the school year come during the first few and the last few. At the beginning, they get to say hello to old friends and make new ones. At the end, they say goodbye to tests and desks and homework for the summer.
In next week’s Neighbors editions, we start to highlight the Class of 2011. In each town, we will publish a special two-page spread that will include names of those graduating, names and photos of the school’s valedictorians and the final entries of the senior diaries.
You’ll also see photos of those seniors who were voted in for those fun “class superlatives” - Most Likely to Succeed, Class Couple, Most Likely to be President, etc.
While these votes are purely based on popularity - like most other voting involving high school students (Prom king and queen, student council president, etc.) - I think it’s a fun way to end the school year.
As for me, if my friends or family voted today, I’m guessing I’d end up with Most Likely to Go Bald, Class Reporter and Pickiest Eater.
