Boardman girls advance four events to regionals

The Boardman girls track team had five girls in four events qualify to the regionals, one step away from the state meet.

The girls advancing from the district meet were seniors Nicole Vlad and Katie Heney, juniors Tori Moore and Jenny Bresnahan and sophomore Sarina Mauerman.

Heney is making her third trip to the regional meet in the 3200-meter run. She placed fourth at the districts running 12:00.44 in her speciality. Vlad is making her second trip to the regionals in the 300-meter hurdles after running a career best of 47.68 to finish in fourth place. Moore is making her second trip to the regional meet by running a career best time of 5:19.23 in the 1600-meter run, cutting some seven seconds off her previous best time and finishing in fourth place. Bresnahan and Mauerman are making their first trip to regionals in the pole vault. Mauerman placed a team high third place with a vault of 8-6 and Bresnahan placed right behind her in fourth with the same vaulting height of 8-6. The top four from the regionals will then earn a spot at the state meet in Columbus.

The girls’ team finished in seventh place with 53 points during the district meet. Austintown Fitch won the meet for the first time since 1999 with 135 points.

Head Coach Denise Gorski summed up her team’s performance by saying, “The girls who qualified to regionals had outstanding performances to advance to next week.”
