YOUNGSTOWN

A 27-year-old city man is in Mahoning County jail facing charges of domestic violence after purportedly holding a gun to his wife’s head and firing the weapon into the floor of his home.

Police arrested Louis May, 27, at his Walden Court home late Wednesday evening. He is expected to be arraigned today in Youngstown Municipal Court.

According to police reports, May had been arguing with his 30-year-old wife most of Wednesday. The matter, according to reports, escalated after the couple received company just after 11 p.m. that day — a 30-year-old female and two children had come to the West Side home.

Police reports say May came into a room where his wife was sitting, pushed her off a chair and pointed a gun to her head while demanding that she read text messages in her cellphone.

A 31-year-old woman who was sitting next to May’s wife jumped on top of the wife begging May not to shoot her as May held a gun to his wife’s head.

Those inside the house told police May threatened to shoot everyone inside the home, then fired one shot into the floor inches away from his wife. Reports say the two children, both under age 11, were only a few feet away from where the shot hit the floor.

After the shot was fired, one of the female adults visiting the house grabbed the children and ran out of the house. She went a short distance away and called police.

Officers arrived at the house and found May standing outside. A handgun was found hidden under a tire behind the garage of the home.

Police reports also say May’s wife found the bullet that had been fired by her husband in the basement of the home after it traveled through the floor. The spent bullet was turned over to police as evidence.
