Poland fall sports parent meetings set

POLAND

The Poland High School Athletic Department will have a fall sports parent meeting on June 8 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

The meeting is mandatory for parents whose son or daughter is playing a high school fall sport.

All parents should plan on attending. To be discussed will be policies and procedures for the upcoming fall season.

Also, on June 9 at 7 p.m. in the middle school gymnasium there will be a fall sports meeting for parents of athletes in grades 7-8.

PAC awards

WEXFORD, Pa.

The Washington & Jefferson College men and Grove City College women have captured the 2010-11 Presidents’ Athletic Conference all-sports trophies.

The all-sports trophies are awarded annually to the schools which perform the best across the board in league competition.

On the men’s side, the Presidents rode a spring PAC title in golf and runner-up finish in track & field as they built on their lead following the winter season.

W&J finished with 55.5 points, ahead of Grove City (48), followed by Westminster (43), Saint Vincent (42.5), Thomas More (40.5), Bethany (39), Thiel (35.5) and Waynesburg (34).

Mercer Raceway Park

MERCER, Pa

Mercer Raceway Park has two events scheduled for the Memorial Day holiday.

On Saturday the rescheduled $5,000-to-win Sprint Car Shootout will be on the racing card.

On Sunday for the annual All-American Spring Nationals World Championship Pulling event is scheduled.

Youngstown Mixed Doubles is Sunday

The Youngstown Mixed Doubles bowling tournament will be held Sunday at Amron Lanes.

Champion edges Boardman

CHAMPION

Haley McAllister homered and doubled to lead the Champion High softball team to a 2-1 victory over Boardman.

McAllister also scored on Tawny Rogers’ double. The Flashes are 23-0 and meet South Range today in a Division III regional semifinal at Massillon High.

Kayleigh Huck homered for the Spartans who will play Hudson today in a Division I regional semifinal at the University of Akron.

Mathews defeats Ledgemont

VIENNA

Jeremy Forsythe’s bases-loaded walk-off single led the Mathews High baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Ledgemont to earn a share of the Northeastern Athletic Conference title.

Jimmy Hoffman’s suicide squeeze bunt single scored Tyler Hunt to tie the game for the Mustangs (9-5, 8-2). Nate Homan and Hunt tossed a three-hitter.

LA reaches deal in principle with Brown

LOS ANGELES

The Los Angeles Lakers reached a deal in principle with former Cleveland coach Mike Brown on Wednesday to succeed Phil Jackson, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the Lakers hadn’t made the official announcement. ESPN, which employed Brown as an analyst this season, first reported Brown had been hired.

Brown emerged as the front-runner for the daunting task of succeeding the 11-time NBA champion Jackson with one of the NBA’s iconic franchises.

Former Ravens kicker Matt Stover to retire

OWINGS MILLS, Md.

Former NFL kicker Matt Stover will retire after a stellar career in which he scored more than 2,000 points.

The Ravens say the 43-year-old will make the announcement on this afternoon at Baltimore’s training complex.
