Baseball teams in regionals

Staff report

Here’s a free tip for all you high school baseball fans who are planning to follow your favorite team at the regional tournament this week: Pack an umbrella.

That’s not news to the three Valley teams still alive in the OHSAA tournament. They’ve been battling Mother Nature — and losing, for the most part — all spring.

It’s not expected to change today and Friday. The National Weather Service has indicated a 70 percent chance of rain and strong storms today and tonight in Northeast Ohio.

That puts the status of those games up in the air. Anything not played today will be moved to Friday, with the championship games on Saturday.

Any further delays really muddies the picture because of the holiday weekend.

Springfield (15-6) won its second district title in three years last weekend, and will play Fairport Harding in a regional semifinal today at 2 p.m. That Division IV game will be played at the Pipe Yard in Lorain.

The other semifinal matches Rittman (22-5) against Buckeye Central (22-5).

In Div. III, Ursuline (13-7) takes on Keystone (18-8) at 2 p.m. at Ducky Schroeder Field in Massillon. The winner will advance to play either Canton Central Catholic (21-8) or Independence (19-5).

In Div. II, Canfield (15-8) will play Mentor Lake Catholic (23-5) at The Ball Park in Hudson at 5 p.m.

The other semifinal matches Tallmadge (18-5) and Akron Hoban (15-7).

The state semifinals and championship games will be played at Huntington Park.
