Williamson to transfer
ANN ARBOR, MICH.
The website annarbor.com says Warren Harding graduate D.J. Williamson, a redshirt freshman wide receiver with the Michigan football team, has decided to transfer.
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound receiver did not play last year. He was the 100-meter state title winner in track as a junior in high school, winning in 10.59 seconds.
At Michigan, the 20-year old was stuck on the depth chart behind receivers Roy Roundtree, Junior Hemingway, Martavious Odoms, Kelvin Grady and Darryl Stonum.
Silvestri earns honor
INDIANAPOLIS
Youngstown’s Dom Silvestri was one of five Butler University baseball players to earn All-Horizon League recognition.
Silvestri, Michael Letzter, Grant Fillipitch and Luke Duncan earned second-team honors. Freshman Patrick Guinane was voted to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team.
Silvestri, a right-hander, is having his best season. He owns a 6-4 record with a 3.51 ERA in 12 starts. Silvestri was 5-3 with a 3.66 ERA in eight league starts. He enters the league tourney with 55 strikeouts over 82 innings.
Mitzel is first
OXFORD
Allison Mitzel, a senior at Poland Seminary High School, placed first in the Optimist International Pre-qualifer at Indian Run Golf Club shooting a 75.
Next month in Canton, Mitzel will be playing in the State Qualifier.
Miller judges another fight
PUEBLA, Mexico
Tom Miller of Mineral Ridge was a judge on Saturday in Puebla, Mexico, where challenger Juan Palacios (28-5-2) of Managua, Nicaragua scored a 12-round unanimous decision upset over champion Sammy
Gutierrez (27-3) of Puebla for the WBA Strawweight World Championship.
It was Miller’s 65th world title fight and his 88th overall. His next assignment is the finals of the K.O. Drugs Boxing Tournament on Friday.
Mount’s Thomas recognized

Mount Union senior Scott Thomas (West Branch) has been named Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference by the conference’s 10 faculty athletics representatives.
Thomas recently graduated with a degree in biology with a 3.75 grade point average.
On the track, he was OAC Indoor Track Champion in the 55 meter dash and 200 meters.
Gruver’s service acknowledged
KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
In addition to serving as the Tennessee ace, junior starting pitcher Steven Gruver (Fitch High) has found time to perform volunteer work during his three years at Rocky Top.
Gruver has been honored for those efforts, being named to the 2011 Southeastern Conference Baseball Community Service Team.
A native of Canfield, Gruver has visited sick children at the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, helped serve hot meal for homeless and joined the rest of the Big Orange squad to help build a home with Habitat for Humanity.
On the field, the 6-1 southpaw was Tennessee’s top pitcher this season, putting together a 5-7 record and 3.95 ERA in 14 starts. He threw a team-high 95.2 innings.
Anzevino on watch list
KENT
Kent State fifth-year senior center Chris Anzevino (Warren) has been named to the Rimington Trophy 2011 Spring Watch List.
Recognized for the second year in a row, Anzevino is one of 42 players on the preliminary list for the trophy that is awarded annually to the top center in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
The 6-2, 305-pound Anzevino was a third team All-MAC honoree in 2011 and has started all 36 games for the Golden Flashes over the past three seasons.
