1810: Argentina begins its revolt against Spanish rule with the forming of the Primera Junta in Buenos Aires.

1911: Mexican President Porfirio Diaz resigns; he goes into exile in France for the rest of his life.

1935: Babe Ruth hits the 714th and final home run of his career, for the Boston Braves, in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1946: Transjordan (now Jordan) becomes a kingdom as it proclaims its new monarch, Abdullah I.

1961: President John F. Kennedy tells a joint session of Congress: “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.” (Apollo 11 accomplishes that goal eight years later.)

1986: An estimated 7 million Americans participate in “Hands Across America” to raise money for the nation’s hungry and homeless.

1986: Clarence Pawlicki, director of the Ohio Department of Development, says the Mahoning Valley is still floundering while other regions are experiencing growth in part because the area lacks focus on what it can and should be doing.

Gloomy skies couldn’t keep 350 runners from participating in the Eight Annual Strouss-Kaumann’s Fun Run that started at Federal Plaza.

1971: Four of 32 Youngstown State University cadets are recognized at the university’s ROTC Awards Day: Pfc. Dennis Sullivan of Niles, Sgt. Maj. Gary R. Gilmore of Warren, First Lt. Frank Wanat and Lt. Col. Douglas O. Kidd, both of Youngstown.

Anmarie Donlin, a 16-year employee in the 19th Congressional District under Michael J. Kirwan, is discharged by Rep. Charles J. Carney, who had cut her salary from $27,185 to $11,000 in January.

1961: Third Ward Councilman James Pastore asks the Law Department to prepare legislation making retirement of civil service employees mandatory at age 65.

Mahoning County Judge Fred J. Gough is criticized by a state examiner for his accounting methods, especially keeping $2,378 in public cash locked in his desk drawer.

Saramar Industries Inc., 4021 Mahoning Ave., buys the Aluminum Fence Co. of Cleveland and is moving its operations to Youngstown.

1936: Ben Wyatt McKay Jr., an 8-year-old pianist, will play two of his compositions at the first annual youth music festival at Stambaugh Auditorium.

Mrs. Harry Zeve of Squaw Creek Country Club receives the gold medal for low net score in the Northeastern Ohio PGA Pictorial Review nationwide women’s tournament at the Acacia Country Club in Cleveland.
