Man stands trial in San Diego for courthouse bomb
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Opening statements have been held in the trial of a man accused of persuading his girlfriend to bomb a San Diego courthouse and then turning her in to the FBI for a reward.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Donny Love’s trial got under way Tuesday in the same federal courthouse where a backpack bomb shattered glass doors in 2008.
A prosecutor told jurors that the Riverside County man arranged the bombing for the reward because he was $26,000 behind on his mortgage.
The defense argued that Love’s girlfriend and two others who pleaded guilty to the bombing falsely accused him in hopes of receiving shorter sentences.
The 10 charges against Love include conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction. He faces at least 30 years in prison if convicted.
