Short and (un)sweet

Golf doesn’t have to be all done up to be a challenge, and that’s what you get at Deer Creek Golf Course in Hubbard, and especially with its 195-yard No. 12.

The LaCivita family course has a testy offering in this par 3 as the hole rides along a ridge that, as you get to the green, is only 30 or so yards wide. Everywhere else, there is fall-off that will not let you see the cup — just the flag.

The left side drop is most nasty, topped off with a new bunker that wraps two-thirds of the side of the green. The back side is unfun as well, with trees and wetlands backstopping the hole.

Even the green has some deft crowning on the right side that pushes away balls.

Straight is rewarded here; don’t spray.
